In a week that celebrates two international days of health action, World Cancer Day (4 February) and Time to Talk Day (6 February), the skilled volunteering charity, Pilotlight, is teaming up with Costello Medical, a scientific consultancy with a dedicated pro bono team, to launch a new push to support health charities in the UK.
The UK has over 6,000 health charities, each playing a role in supporting people when they are most vulnerable and pressing for innovation to improve health outcomes for the future.
To understand how to advance their work, Pilotlight and Costello Medical are launching the first capacity building survey of health charities in the UK. The survey is designed to identify the specific needs and priorities of health charities across the UK, including opportunities for support around leadership, strategy and scientific expertise.
It uses an established template for understanding organisational support needs, that was first used by Pilotlight in 2023 to look at the different needs of charities and social enterprises working on climate and sustainability. Adding to this, the survey explores the scientific support needs of health-focused charities.
“Who cares for the health carers? We understand that health charities face multiple challenges, from funding constraints to increasing demand for their services. We are encouraging all health charities and social enterprises in the UK to participate in our survey and help shape future free pro bono support for their work” says Ed Mayo, CEO of Pilotlight.

As an incentive, all survey participants can enter into a draw to win a Gift Hamper packed full of social enterprise gifts to share. The survey is open on 4 February and runs up to 4 April 2025.
