After six years as Chair of Pilotlight, it’s time for me to pass the baton on. It’s a bittersweet moment—one that brings with it both a sense of accomplishment and a great deal of sadness as I reflect on what has been an extraordinary journey.

When I first stepped into this role, I knew I was joining an organisation with a powerful mission: to help charities and social enterprises thrive by connecting them with business leaders who can share their expertise. What I didn’t fully anticipate was how much I’d come to enjoy both my work as a trustee and my engagement on the Pilotlight 360 programmes working with a charity as a Pilotlighter.

Reflecting on the journey

One of the great privileges of being Chair has been witnessing firsthand the impact Pilotlight creates. Over the years, I’ve seen how our collaborations have strengthened charities, helping them grow, innovate, and serve their communities more effectively. Watching the ripple effects of that work—the way it empowers leaders, unlocks potential, and ultimately changes lives—has been deeply inspiring.

The last six years have not been without challenges. The pandemic, in particular, forced us to adapt and rethink how we deliver our support. Yet, in those moments of uncertainty, Pilotlight’s resilience and creativity shone through. It has been a testament to the strength of our team and the enduring power of our mission.

Growth and transformation

Underpinning everything has been the incredible people I’ve worked alongside—staff, trustees, Pilotlighters, and the charity leaders we support. Together, we’ve made strides I’m immensely proud of: expanding our reach, enhancing the diversity of our network, and evolving our programmes to meet the ever-changing needs of the third sector.

But this journey has been about more than organisational achievements. It’s been a personal learning curve, too. Chairing Pilotlight has taught me the importance of listening deeply, leading collaboratively, and embracing the complexities of balancing social impact with business strategy.

Looking Ahead

Stepping down is always difficult but I feel confident leaving Pilotlight in a position of strength. We have an excellent team, a fantastic CEO, an amazing board of trustees and a clear vision for the future. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust, support, and camaraderie I’ve experienced throughout this journey.

As I hand over the reins to the Alison Forrestal, my successor, I’m excited to see Pilotlight continue to thrive and innovate. I have no doubt the organisation will keep making an even greater difference in the years to come. I look forward to the amazing achievements it will make in the next six years.

To everyone who has been part of this journey—thank you. Together, we’ve achieved something truly remarkable, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for this exceptional organisation.
