Buxton Civic Association (BCA) is a volunteer led environmental heritage charity, caring for the natural and built heritage of the small rural town. The charity’s purpose is to make the lives of those who live, work, and visit Buxton better. BCA is rapidly approaching its 60th anniversary. One of the first civic societies to be formed, BCA remains highly unusual amongst others due to the heritage assets it owns. These include nine historic woods (totalling c200 acres), and Poole's Cavern, a cave system, little known, but globally acknowledged as unique. Whilst the conservation of the woods and caves has historically been the core focus, BCA has recently become more concerned with using these assets to support wellbeing & community development initiatives appreciating they can play a part in positively effecting lives. For example, its Stronger Roots project was designed to regenerate the woods (responding to Ash Dieback) and grow people’s connection with nature to support their health and wellbeing.
